What is osteopathy and why is it beneficial?

Osteopathy is a hands-on therapy focusing on the joints, muscles and spine. Treatment of the musculoskeletal framework aims to positively affect the body’s nervous, circulatory, and lymphatic systems which in turn improves overall health.

Both diagnosis and treatment are carried out with the hands and osteopaths spend years honing their sense of touch as well as learning expert techniques.

However, osteopathy is not just a set of techniques, rather it is a philosophy. Osteopaths believe that the body’s structure and function are interconnected, meaning an issue in one part of the body can affect another. That’s why osteopaths don’t just focus on where you feel pain; we look for the underlying causes and treat the body as a whole.

Osteopathy can help with many issues, including back and neck pain, joint problems, headaches, and posture-related discomfort, as well as specialised treatment for pregnancy, post-partum or babies. Our goal is to reduce tension, restore movement, and support your body’s natural ability to heal itself.

At Align Osteopaths, we’re dedicated to helping you feel your best with gentle, tailored treatments designed to improve your health and well-being.

Holistic osteopathy for whole body healing with structural, functional and specialised techniques.

STRUCTURAL OSTEOPATHY
Targeting the root of musculoskeletal issues

Structural osteopathy is a direct approach that focuses on the musculoskeletal system to treat stiffness, chronic pain, and misalignment. At Align Osteopaths, we may offer firmer, hands-on treatments, which can include deep tissue massage, stretching, adjustments and joint mobilisation. These techniques help free up joints and muscles that have become tight or restricted, allowing for greater flexibility and pain relief.

Every patient is different, and we will tailor direct techniques to your unique body and preferences. Whether you respond better to firmer treatments or prefer a gentler touch, our osteopaths will work with you to determine the most effective approach. For those who enjoy deeper manipulation, we use specific, safe adjustments that sometimes result in a satisfying ‘click’ as tension is released from a joint.
FUNCTIONAL OSTEOPATHY
Encouraging natural balance through gentle techniques

Functional osteopathy is a subtle and gentle approach that focuses on supporting the body’s innate ability to heal itself. At Align Osteopaths, we use a range of indirect techniques designed to encourage natural balance without forceful manipulation. These include methods like Balanced Ligamentous Tension (BLT), which gently restores proper alignment and motion by easing tension in ligaments, and inhibition, a technique aimed at releasing tight muscles and calming overactive areas.

Unlike structural osteopathy, functional techniques often involve light pressure and careful positioning to help the body find its path to recovery. This approach is particularly suitable for patients who prefer a less forceful treatment or have conditions requiring extra sensitivity. Functional osteopathy can be especially effective for those with acute pain, chronic conditions related to trauma, hypermobility or sensitivity to more direct techniques.
CRANIAL OSTEOPATHY
Gentle, subtle healing

Cranial osteopathy is a gentle, indirect form of osteopathy that focuses on relieving stress and strain held deep within the body. Using a highly developed sense of touch, our osteopaths can feel subtle pulsations from the central nervous system that are expressed throughout the body. By identifying these patterns, we help guide your body back into its natural balance, allowing it to unwind and heal on its own.

This form of osteopathy is ideal for individuals who prefer a lighter touch or have more sensitive conditions. It is especially beneficial for babies, children, and pregnant women, as it helps release tension and promotes a healthy, natural balance in the body without the need for forceful manipulation. Cranial osteopathy’s gentle approach makes it a popular choice for those seeking calm, non-invasive treatment.
BIODYNAMIC OSTEOPATHY
Restoring the body’s natural blueprint

Biodynamic osteopathy takes a more holistic, energy-based approach to healing. At Align Osteopaths, we focus on tuning into the body’s ‘blueprint’—the natural force that knows how to grow, heal, and function. During biodynamic treatments, our osteopaths work with the body’s memory of embryological growth, to tap into its inherent wisdom, healing and self-organising forces.

This approach goes beyond the physical to restore health at a deeper, more systemic level. By listening to the body and focusing on its natural rhythms, biodynamic osteopathy helps realign not just the structure of the body but also its energy and immune systems. This method encourages the body to remember its state of health and move toward that natural balance. Biodynamic osteopathy is well-suited for individuals seeking a gentle, holistic approach—whether they are managing complex health issues, recovering from trauma, or simply aiming to reconnect with their body’s innate capacity for healing and balance.

During your first appointment, the osteopath will take a detailed medical history and perform a physical examination to assess your condition. We will discuss your symptoms, lifestyle, and any specific concerns you have before developing a personalised treatment plan.

Yes, osteopathy is a safe, non-invasive, evidence-based practice. Osteopaths undergo rigorous training and are regulated healthcare professionals in many countries. We take care to ensure that treatments are tailored to the individual needs of each patient.

This depends on your specific condition, goals and how your body responds to treatment. Patients typically experience relief within 2-3 sessions, but we may recommend further treatments or maintenance depending on your condition.

No, you do not need a referral to see an osteopath. You can book an appointment directly with us. However, if you have a complex medical condition or are under the care of another healthcare professional, it may be helpful to discuss your osteopathy treatment with them and vice versa.

In New Zealand, some osteopaths can use the title "Dr" if they have completed a specific five-year degree at certain institutions. At Align Osteopaths, one of our team members, Michaela, trained in Melbourne where osteopaths are allowed to use this title. However, not all osteopaths hold the "Dr" title, as it depends on the qualifications and training pathways. While osteopaths may use this title as a professional courtesy, they are not medical doctors.

You may be asked to remove some clothing (never underwear) for assessment and treatment. Loose, comfortable clothing is ideal. Your comfort and modesty are always prioritized, and we will keep you covered with towels or blankets if required.

Osteopathy is a non-invasive therapy. Some discomfort is to be expected, especially when working on sensitive areas, but your osteopath will work within your comfort levels and explain each step of the process. Pain is subjective from person to person, so communication is key. If you are worried about your session causing any pain, please contact the clinic to be advised on the most appropriate practitioner or treatment style.

After treatment, you may feel a range of effects, including:
Positive changes: Reduced pain, improved movement, and a sense of lightness.
Temporary soreness: Like after a good workout, or mild stiffness as your body adjusts.
Occasional rebound: Some may feel more discomfort initially, which typically settles as the body realigns.

Drink plenty of water and avoid strenuous activities for 24–48 hours.
Follow any specific advice from your osteopath to support recovery.

Chiropractic: Primarily focuses on the spine and high-velocity adjustments (the 'click').
Physiotherapy: Often employs exercise-based rehabilitation and equipment.
Osteopathy: Takes a whole-body approach, using manual therapy to address a wide range of musculoskeletal and systemic issues.
